Internal Framing

Subway still life: Zhaojiabang Rd. station, 2013

The internal framing of this photograph was really captivating but I am also thinking its a good way to get photos of people on the tube, as the train stops I can simply take pictures of people when the doors open, catching them off guard. The films of Wong Kar-Wai, especially ‘In The Mood For Love’ incorporate internal framing within each shot. I think framing and composition are really important to photos, although voyeurism and a tactile unrefined look to images can also communicate things I think things such as loneliness and isolation can really be captured through framing. For example in In the Mood for Love, the characters are always trapped within frames within the images, I think this could perfectly be incorporated into my experimentation, seeing if I can evoke these themes in my work and using the characteristics of the Subway to my advantage.

‘In The Mood For Love’ – 2001

I mentioned in a previous post how I would like a triptych of a packed train car and an empty platform, I think they can both be communicated within a single image. The packed train, a cage for the people inside, and a platform with hardly anyone there could make a great image. Black and White will emphasise this as well, the lack of colours emphasising the light of the platform and darkness of the trains, texture playing a huge part in it as well. For example the cluttered faces with the smooth uninterrupted lines of the platform.
